Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 

The purpose of this Act is to develop, implement, and enforce accessibility standards to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities with respect to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment, buildings, structures, and premises, on or before January 2025.

Recent Developments

June 2024: 2023 Initial Recommendations Report Released

Background:

In December 2021, the Minister for Seniors and Accessibility established the Design of Public Spaces Standards Development Committee to undertake a review of Ontario’s built environment standards in regulation under both the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 and the 2015 barrier-free accessibility requirements in the Ontario Building Code. The committee’s 2023 Initial Recommendations Report was released in June 2024.​

PRO’s Response:

PRO submitted feedback on the 2023 Initial Recommendations Report, expressing support and proposing additional considerations.

Outcome:

The committee is reviewing public feedback before final recommendations are made.
