More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022

In 2022, the Government of Ontario announced plans to build 1.5 million new homes by 2031. This pledge instigated a series of new policies and legislative changes aimed at accelerating the rate of housing developments across the Province.

Recent Developments

October 2022: Province Introduced Bill 23, More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022

Background:

In October 2022, the Government of Ontario introduced Bill 23, More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022. The Bill proposed changes to several existing pieces of legislation that impact the parks and recreation sector, including:​

PRO’s Response:

PRO submitted a policy response, expressing opposition to the legislative changes. The proposed changes removed key oversight provisions and fee structures that ensure the sustainable and equitable development of communities. PRO also developed a Toolkit and letter/email template to support members in advocating against the legislative changes.

Outcome:

In November 2022, the Government of Ontario passed Bill, 23, More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022.

 

PRO continues to advocate for this legislation to be amended or repealed through policy responses and Ministerial meetings. Particularly, PRO recommends that development charges, community benefits charges, and parkland dedication quotas for affordable and attainable housing areas are reinstated.
